Trial of Wait List feature in ProQuest eBooks

Place Hold on ProQuest eBooks
Article Date
August 31, 2026

Have you tried to get into an eBook on ProQuest but it wasn't available? It usually means that the maximum user limit has been reached and no copies are currently available. When this comes up, we recommend you come back later and try again to gain access (usually within 30-60 minutes). You may now join a Wait List for the eBook (for titles that we have more than 1 copy) by placing a hold if all copies are in use. Once a copy becomes available, you will receive an email alert once the book is available.

Getting set up

For the first time you are using this feature, you will need to set up a Wait List email. We recommend that prior to placing a hold you go into your Profile (on the top right corner of the screen) while on ProQuest Ebook Central. On the Profile page, find the Wait List Email box, and enter the email you would like to use. This email does not need to be the same as the one you use to login to Library resources. You will receive an email that requests you to click on Confirm My Email. Once that is done you will be able to place a hold. You should only need to do this once.

To place a hold

  1. On the book details page, the Read Online button will be greyed-out and under Availability the title will say In Use. If you wish to place a hold on the title, press the Place Hold button under the book cover.
  2. If you have not already done so, you will need to set up a Wait List email. You can either do this through the pop-up that comes up or you can go to Settings on the top right of your screen and select profile.
  3. Once you've placed the hold, it will display as Hold Placed. You will also have the option to cancel the hold.

Picking up your hold

  1. Once the book becomes available, you will receive a notification email.
  2. If you miss your hold, it will have gone to the next person waiting. Please check on the book again to see if it might be available, or place your hold again.
  3. Once you have finished, please exit out of the book so the next person can access it.

We are setting up a trial of the Wait List feature for the month of September. We would like feedback on this option - please keep an eye out for a survey to be shared at the end of the trial. Or email us with feedback at library@openpolytechnic.ac.nz
